IWSG LINK |
So, it’s the first post of the new year and my mind is
hopping, doing a dance, happy to have a new year begin. But as an IWSG co-host this month, I don’t want to
write about the new year, since that’s what everyone is doing, really, I mean,
it’s a no brainer. We’re all excited about the new, fresh start, right?! Of
course!
Still, I want to write about a new challenge in my life. I
have a chance to choose a new path and I want to take it. I no longer make “New
Year’s Resolutions” because last year I didn’t and that really worked for me.
However, I do want to write more short stories for my blog, for my peace of
mind, and for practice. So, I’m starting this year out with a new story for
you. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it. Feel free to visit the other blogs participating and remember to thank my awesome co-hosts: Elizabeth Seckman, Chrys Fey, and Michelle Wallace!
Now, as the saying
goes…Without Further Ado…
No flight without a pre-flight check! |
THE NEW BEE
“Hey Wiser-bee, I’m excited about my first trip out. Are you
ready yet?”
“New-bee, don’t be so pushy. We always have a pre-flight
check before leaving the hive. Got it?”
“Right, sorry Wiser-bee. I forgot.”
“Which is why we have the check. You can’t forget anything.
If you do, you might not make it back to the hive and that’s not only bad for
you, but for the colony as well. We don’t ever want to do anything to
disappoint the queen, our great mother.”
“Oh. I didn’t think of that.”
“Another reason for the pre-flight check. Okay, ready now?”
“Yes sir.”
“I’ll start. You take over when you’re ready.”
New-bee nodded.
Wiser-Bee said, “First, wings. Everything in working order?”
He buzzed his wings in example.
New-bee buzzed his in response. “Working order.”
“Second, antennae?” Wiser-bee moved his up and down then left and
right.
New-bee followed suit. “Antennae working fine. May I say the
next one?”
“Of course, if you think you’re ready…?”
“Oh yes. I am. Third,
fur on legs fluffed and ready for pollen load.” New-bee shifted his back legs
and wiggled them to emphasis the fact that his leg fur was standing on end.
Wiser-bee mimicked him while nodding with pride.
“Last, but not least,” New-bee said, “stomach full of honey
for the trip out and back.”
Wiser-bee would have smiled if he’d been able to. Instead he
patted New-bee on the head and said, “Lead on little New-bee. Pre-flight check impeccable
and you’re now ready for your maiden voyage.”
Wiser-Bee & New-Bee |
New-bee, now that he’d made it through the rough taking down
he’d deserved for forgetting procedure,
and then making it through his first pre-flight check with shining
stars, now remembered protocol, and his manners. “Thank you, sir. Would you
like to go first?”
Wiser-bee nodded and took off, leading the way out into the
bright new world New-bee had yet to experience. New-bee didn’t know what the
day would bring, but he hoped he came home with so much pollen that even the
queen would sit up and take notice. But, he reminded himself, if he
didn’t…well, it was, after all, his first run. Thankful to have Wiser-bee to
guide him, New-bee buzzed his wings, lifted off and flew joyously into his new
life.
New-Bee's goal! |
HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!

A perfect story for a New Year. Thanks for co-hosting this month, Lisa.
ReplyDeleteHappy new year! And my legs are fluffed and ready to go. Winter has some perks, such as not having to shave as much. Loved the story.
ReplyDeleteCute story. This year is going to be buzzing! I didn't make any resolutions either. :)
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year, and thanks for co-hosting!
Cute story, Lisa. Best wishes for a great 2015. Thanks for co-hosting IWSG this month.
ReplyDeleteNew Bee is starting off right!
ReplyDeleteThanks for co-hosting today, Lisa.
Hi Lisa, Happy New Year! I love your new-bee story, it makes me think of me!
ReplyDelete'Tis a wise New-bee to be patient and learn from others. Striking out on our own without experience often leads to striking out. A fun post, Lisa. Thanks for co-hosting this month.
ReplyDeleteThat story is perfect for the start of a new year. Thanks. I'll try to remember the New-bee's feelings when I sit down to write.
ReplyDeleteThanks for co-hosting this month's IWSG!
Not sure if my comment went through. Anyway, here's wishing you a wonderful new year! Love your story! Thanks for co-hosting!
ReplyDeleteHappy new year! I'm with you on writing short stories. In fact, I've gotten so into it in the last couple months that I'm having a...uh...not so fun time getting back into novel writing. IT WILL HAPPEN. *sigh*
ReplyDeleteHere's to an epic 2015 and bee-ing the best we can!

ReplyDeleteHappy New Year, new-bee! I'm excited for him. The bees in our garden are huge this year. Big and blue and happy to be out and about. Can't smile whenever I see one.
ReplyDeleteThanks for co-hosting this month, Lisa! Hope all your non-planned plans come true!
Thanks for co-hosting, and thanks for the story share! :)
ReplyDeleteIt's fun to get inside the head of a bee! Fun stuff. Keep writing. Thanks for co-hosting the IWSG this month!

Happy New Year, Lisa!!!
ReplyDeleteSuch a cute little story! I don't make New Year's Resolutions either. I make goals for myself, but I'm flexible and totally okay if I don't get to all of them. ;)
ReplyDeleteThat was a darling story. I am fully ready for an exciting new year now.
ReplyDeleteA wonderful story, Lisa!
ReplyDeleteIt makes me think that, at the beginning of a new year, we should adopt the new-bee mentality... look at life through the new-bee lense... a fresh start... remain open-minded and receptive... filled with enthusiasm/excitement/ hope for what is yet to come... anything is possible!
Short stories are great for practising lean, tight writing.
I'm so glad to be co-hosting with you today!

Now you have me thinking of summer and watching bees buzz around the flowers, but there are six inches of snow outside my window.
ReplyDeleteVery cute story! I like New-Bee's go'gettem' attitude!
ReplyDeleteThanks for co-hosting!

Happy New Year to you! I know YOU with all your dreams will bring back a lot of pollen for your efforts and we can all sit up and take notice. You go, GRRL! Thanks for co hosting this month!!
ReplyDeleteHow crazy that you'd decide to write short stories this year. I made the same decision and even recruited other authors. We started a new short story blog. Shorts really help you refine your writing don't they? Good luck with your goal! Maybe you can join us on the blog next year. I enjoyed New-Bee's journey.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the cute story! I feel like New-bee, about to fly out into the self-publishing world, though not nearly as confidently. Happy IWSG Day and thanks for co-hosting!
ReplyDeleteHere's to the wiser bee helping us new bees out. :) Happy New Year.

ReplyDelete12th January 2015
ReplyDeleteDear Lisa,
Cute story. I love all kinds of animal stories, so why not write about tiny animals like bees? Their work-ethic is just what I need to get things done. My novel is on the back-burner while I am looking for a job. But I write something for IWSG every month to not for get my goal.
Congrats on being co-host this month.
